Top Stories in Golf

Like the weather, golf is heating up.  And today, we’re discussing some of the hottest golf stories on the internet!  What’s your favorite golf related story from the past week?

Dufner Beats Els, Wins Zurich Classic

Jason Dufner took on Ernie Els in a two-hole playoff at TPC Louisianna to win his first tournament in 164 starts on the PGA Tour.  Dufner and Els both missed birdie putts in the first playoff hole, sending them to the 18th tee for a second extra hole.  Dufner won with a birdie shot after Els’ missed his attempt for birdie from the fringe.

“It’s always really tough playing on Sundays whether you’re in the lead or middle of the pack, and today I was fighting, trying to win an event, and I think I showed myself a good bit out there,” Dufner said. “It was tough. Ernie made a great run at me and it felt like with five or six holes (to go) we were probably going to be battling for the win.”

Stacy Lewis Beats Lexi Thompson by a Single Stroke at Mobile Bay LPGA Classic

Stacy Lewis avoided a charge from 17-year old Lexi Thompson at the LPGA Classic on Sunday to capture her second LPGA Tour victory.  Lewis shot a 69 in the final round to beat Thompson, who made an amazing run, scoring a 7-under 65 at the Crossings Course, which matched her best ever round.

Lewis’ victory Sunday is her fifth top-10 finish of 2012, including a runner-up finish at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open where she lost in a six-way playoff.

USGA set to Release Film on Nicklaus’ first U.S. Open win (from Golf.com)

Jack Nicklaus was a 22-year-old rookie, golf’s next big star still without a win as a pro. Arnold Palmer, the Masters champion and first golfer to transcend his sport, was at the peak of his popularity and playing before a home crowd at Oakmont for the U.S. Open.

“You can’t write that script,” award-winning producer Ross Greenburg said.

That epic 1962 U.S. Open, a pivotal moment in one of golf’s most celebrated rivalries, is what the USGA delivered Greenburg to create a one-hour documentary. This is the 50-year anniversary of Nicklaus’ playoff win over Palmer for the first of his record 18 major championships.

“Jack’s First Major” will be the first USGA film shown on network television, broadcast by NBC Sports on June 17 before its final-round coverage of the U.S. Open.

Tiger Woods Answers Fans Questions, Ignores Media

Tiger normally answers media questions before each tournament, but this week at  the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow, he answered questions for the fans instead, posting a video answering questions from Facebook and Twitter.   Woods’s agent Mark Steinberg told ESPN.com that they were behind on social media and this was an attempt to make up for that and connect with the fans who have been so good to him over the years.  See the full video here.
